counseling approach
Sontanna is deeply passionate about creating an inclusive, warm, and non-judgmental environment for individuals to get curious about themselves and their triggers. She is a big believer in becoming friends with the parts of yourself that hold onto shame, blame, and anger and holding space for those parts. She holds space for the big, complex emotions that come with navigating grief and trauma.
Sontanna integrates a range of evidence-based modalities to support clients in meaningful, lasting change. She is trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing, and offers DBT-informed care inclusive of skills training, phone coaching, and the full DBT model. Her approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, personalized, and tailored to meet each client’s unique needs.
Her clinical approach includes:
SAFE EMDR (Somatic and Attachment-Focused EMDR) to gently process trauma while supporting nervous system regulation.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Sontanna is trained in the full DBT model, including skills training and phone coaching to support clients in real-time. DBT focuses on building emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness skills to navigate intense emotions and high-stress situations.
Internal Family Systems (IFS): IFS supports clients in understanding and connecting with different “parts” of themselves, fostering self-compassion and healing from trauma, attachment wounds, and internal conflict.
Motivational Interviewing: A collaborative, client-centered approach that helps individuals explore ambivalence, strengthen motivation, and move toward meaningful change aligned with their values.
Sontanna believes in a holistic approach that includes both:
● looking at each client as a multi-layered person with unique strengths and
● acknowledging that each individual is a member of a broader society navigating different environmental and societal obstacles.
She believes in building trust with clients through direct but compassionate communication to encourage self-empowerment and long term emotional health.
Kelly is especially passionate about supporting individuals facing challenges related to trauma (including sexual and interpersonal violence), borderline personality disorder, and chronic suicidality.
